History of the school
The School opened in 1897 and closed in 1986 from which time it has only ever been partially used and has lain empty for ten years.
There were moves to demolish the building in 2000, but the council resisted and Yorkshire Forward stepped in with a £1m grant to secure the fabric of the building.
The school’s most famous gift to the city is dance. Nadine Senior was appointed Senior PE teacher in 1972 and in her passion for dance made it part of the curriculum for everyone. A direct result was the birth of the nationally renowned Phoenix Dance Company (now Theatre) and later the Northern School of Contemporary Dance — both still thriving.
