It’s been a long time coming, but it’s here at last: Leeds’ first African-Caribbean restaurant, African Queen Cuisine.
Located in the beautifully refurbished Shine complex on Harehills Road, African Queen will serve delicious authentic food from Africa and the Caribbean, cooked to perfection by expert chefs. We use only the freshest ingredients, sourced from local produce markets and specialist shops.
Our menu is inspired by many countries from Africa and the Caribbean, using typical foodstuffs such as yams, cassava, plantain (sweet bananas), sweet potatoes, fish, meat, coconut and lime, to name just a few. It will change quarterly in accordance with what’s in season, with a few select staple ‘house’ dishes such as Curried Goat, Rice and Peas, Jerk Chicken, Ackee and Saltfish. We also offer a full range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, as well as exotic cocktails in summer.
Unlike the cheap and cheerful takeaways, which until now have been the only other option for fans of African-Caribbean food in Leeds, the decor at the African Queen is sumptuous, warm and cosy, featuring genuine African artwork, fresh flowers and soft jazz music. In short, it is a place where you’ll want to come and linger, whether with friends and family over a full dinner or for a coffee and a light snack with business colleagues.
And if you’re passing during the day why not pop into the African Queen Cafè? It serves a full range of smoothies, freshly pressed juices, teas from around the world, specialty coffees from Africa and the Caribbean and freshly-baked cakes and pastries.
The African Queen is a childhood-dream-come-true for its founder and director, Sinclaire Tchatchouang, who grew up savoring her grandmother’s tasty home cooking in Cameroon, West Africa, picking up the tricks of the trade along the way.
“My grandmother had a small house by the river and everyone who went past was invited in for something to eat,” recalls Sinclaire. “She had an extraordinary ability to make people feel important and always went that extra mile to make them feel happy and special. She passed those skills on to me and I can’t wait to put them to good use at the African Queen Restaurant, where everyone is made to feel special every day!”
Our restaurant is open from 6pm to 11.30pm Monday to Friday and 12pm to 11.30pm Saturday and Sunday. The African Queen Cafè is open from 7am to 4pm Monday to Friday.
We look forward to welcoming you to the African Queen for a dining experience you won’t forget.
